Panmure House Prize Frequently Asked Questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

The Panmure House Prize is an annual award of US$75,000 in the field of long-term innovation and research. Panmure House Prize Winners can spend this amount to advance work in this field, such as attending conferences, hiring research staff or undertaking buyout policies.

The Panmure House Prize is awarded to emerging leaders in academia and enables research that embodies Adam Smith's own approach to rigorous empiricism and long-term, inter-disciplinary thinking and radical innovation. We are keenly interested in those whose research looks at long-term funding of innovation and in those who take interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches. We welcome applications from relevant disciplines and are particularly keen to receive applications from early-career researchers.

To ensure Panmure House operate a fair and transparent process, we are unable to make any amendments to applications, or accept applications, once the submission date has passed.  We are also unfortunately unable to accept applications from researchers affiliated with Heriot-Watt University.

Applications for 2025 closed Thursday 17 April 2025 17:00 BST.

Applications for the 2026 award cycle will open in January 2026.

We encourage all applicants to read the guidance on submission carefully before embarking on a submission. The submission form cannot be saved and returned to at a later stage.

We encourage all applicants to read the guidance on submission carefully before embarking on a submission. The submission form cannot be saved and returned to at a later stage. The submission space will open in January 2026.

We choose to define early-career as between 3-15 years post completion of PhD. Rationale for this is that career development varies widely between disciplines and individuals. This also encourages those who have taken ‘career breaks’ for a variety of reasons to have this accounted for when comparing their applications to those better established in their careers. We feel this is particularly important Post-COVID.

This also allows for those who have had non-traditional routes into their academic career to submit applications without fear than this will disadvantage them in the process.

The money will be paid directly to the institution with which the winner is affiliated. The institution will deploy it as agreed within the Institutional Agreement.

No. Estates and indirect costs are not eligible to be covered or claimed against the Panmure House Prize.

We will tally the exact amount in GBP or other currencies via a standard USD/ GBP conversion at the time of making the financial transfer.
